NAFTA from Below

While culling votes in the post-manufacturing wastelands across America, Clinton & Obama are still deciding which sides of their mouths spoke against NAFTA first. Much lip service has been paid to the damage done to the labor force in the U.S. as a result of the so-called free trade agreement. What's troubling in this discourse is that there's an implication that Mexicans somehow got a sweet deal from NAFTA. The elite did, of course (sound familiar?), but what about the workers?
This Friday at Robin's Books at 6pm, the Coalition for Justice for the Maquiladoras will be speaking about the devastating effects NAFTA has had on Mexico, including environmental abuses, discrimination, and the brutal supression of human rights and the right to organize. They will also reveal many of the hidden infrastructural damages done to the farmers and workers of Mexico. Check them out.
