Sons of Ben

Over the weekend I met Bryan James. He organizes with S.O.B, Sons of Ben- soccer supporters advocating to bring a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise to Philadelphia. He insists that Philadelphia has the momentum it needs to bring MLS to the area. DC United (MLS powerhouse) have 700 listed supporters. The Sons of Ben have 588 supporters and don’t even have a team yet! The Greater Philadelphia Region is competing for a franchise spot with the likes of El Paso and Phoenix. C’mon, Phoenix? For God’s sake!

One of the considerations for MLS selection is a venue. The Sons of Ben are circulating a petition to the Pennsylvania Congress to establish the Chester waterfront as a stadium site. The stadium will be part of a larger effort to help stimulate Chester’s chronically depressed economy and address the city’s high unemployment rate. The stadium will also be used for professional women’s soccer in 2008, as well as professional outdoor lacrosse in 2009.

If you’re interested in signing their petition, click here. If you want to be Son or Daughter of Ben, check in here.
